Effectiveness of Online Patient Safety Education on the Competency of Nurses in Intensive Care Units: A Quasi-experimental Study

Background & Aims: Maintaining patient safety (PS) is one of professional and ethical duties health care providers. Nurses, as the largest group in system, have a potential significant power influencing quality. Their competency PS essential to ensure quality safe care. Education plays vital role improving providing high nursing Due prevalence COVID-19 need observe social distancing, it not possible hold face-to-face courses. Hence, e-learning valuable option during this pandemic. This study aims evaluate effectiveness online education on competence nurses intensive units (ICUs). Materials Methods: single-group quasi-experimental with pre-test/post-test design that was conducted 2020 Tehran, Iran. Participants were 50 working ICUs Hazrate Rasoole Akram Hospital Firoozgar affiliated Iran University Medical Sciences, who by proportional stratified sampling method. The content educational program prepared using clinical guidelines literature which included materials about (1) its different aspects (medication error, hemovigilance, pressure ulcer, fall, nosocomial infections, hand hygiene, surface equipment disinfection, waste management), (2) culture, (3) effects human factors teamwork error incidence, (4) importance communication patients before after occurrence errors giving appropriate feedback errors, (5) root cause analysis (6) activity an adverse event, (7) risk management. Storyline version 3 software. Educational provided participants Telegram application. Before three months intervention, data collected Patient Safety Competency Self-evaluation (PSCSE) questionnaire. Data analyzed descriptive statistics (frequency, mean, standard deviation) inferential (paired t-test) SPSS software, 22. Results: mean scores knowledge (21.75±3.28), attitude (61.52±4.19) skill (84.66±53.7) intervention significantly higher compared their pretest (P<0.001). total score (167.93±11.61) also intervention. Results showed improved nurses' 17.86%. had highest effect knowledge, followed skills attitudes. Conclusion: Online can increase skills, attitudes ICU ultimately promote PS. Nursing managers use method provide in-service training retraining courses familiarity concepts, help manage medical caused nurses. learning recommended for ICUs, especially
